Champagne Moutard. Where do we start? This Buxeuil-based producer sports a backwoods vibe in the best of ways. They own probably half the town (our guess) with underground tunnels that pop you up in random buildings, all of which are loaded up with foudres, tanks, and barrels. Walking through their doors is like entering another world both in terms of human culture and in terms of what is inside the bottle. Everything is a bit different in the Côte des Bar. Allow us to explain with words and with these wines….
Champagne Moutard NV Brut Rosé de Cuvaison
Rosé Champagne made from 100% Pinot Noir that showcases why the Côte des Bar is so HOT right now – This is a vivid release with layer upon layer of personality. “A rosé of pinot noir from the Côte des Bars, this gains its color from a short maceration on the grape skins. The ripeness of the fruit comes through in exotic spices, like Szechuan peppercorns if they could buzz with coolness rather than heat. The red fruit flavor is tight and savory, without even a whisper of sweetness, lasting with gentle, quiet persistence.” – Wine & Spirits
Champagne Moutard NV Brut Grande Cuvée
Moutard’s Brut Grande Cuvée is one of the region’s benchmark non-vintage Bruts. This Blanc de Noirs Cuvée is the pillar of Moutard’s production and is always a blend of several top vintages. This is aged 36 months on the lees (!!) in their chalk cellars at a constant 54°F in Buxeuil. “This well-cut Champagne is lacy in texture, carrying well-meshed flavors of white raspberry, verbena, pastry and honey. Focused, with a lightly juicy, minerally finish.” – Wine Spectator
Champagne Moutard NV Demi-Sec
New from Moutard! This Blanc de Noirs Cuvée is the pillar of Moutard’s production and is always a blend of several top vintages. Grapes come from the family’s vineyard sites in Buxeuil and Polisy on clay- limestone soils of the Kimmeridgian bank in Côte des Bar. The grapes are hand harvested and gentle pressed, blending 35% of Reserve wine and 65% of last harvest. Fine, rich, light and refreshing, with a delicious after taste! Not too sweet but not dry either – the perfect wine for holiday desserts.
